WHAT DO THE NAMES OF CHRIST REVEAL TO US?

Jesus is Lord of all the universe… and He reigns as Lord in the life of every believer. He is forever worthy of our greatest awe, humble reverence and heartfelt worship. Although we may view Him in finite ways, His attributes are infinite. Let us explore the many names of Jesus in Scripture that unveil facets of His divine character… and manifest His prophetic role in God’s master plan of salvation…

  • Son of God – Jesus is the Son of the Most High… the only begotten Son of the Father… holy and true

The Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. – Luke 1:35

  • The Lion – Jesus is the Victorious One… the One prophesied to rule on the throne of David forever

See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. – Revelation 5:5

  • Son of Man – Jesus appropriates this name to claim both His divinity and His humanity – He is both fully God and fully Man

‘Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?’ ‘I am… and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’ – Mark 14:61-62

  • Messiah – Christ – Jesus is the prophesied Savior… the One promised from the beginning of time to be our Redeemer

‘I know that Messiah (called Christ) is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.’… ‘I, the one speaking to you—I am He.’ – John 4:25-26

  • The Word – Jesus is the Word of God, creator of the world with the Father – He and the Father are one

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made. – John 1:1-3

  • Alpha and Omega – Jesus is the Eternal One… the firstborn over all creation, the Beginning and the End

I am the Alpha and the Omega… who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. – Revelation 1:8

  • Living One – Jesus reveals His timeless existence – He conquered death and is alive forevermore

I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. – Revelation 1:17-18

  • King of Kings – Lord of Lords – Jesus is Lord of all – He reigns with all power, authority and victory

The Lamb will triumph over them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings. – Revelation 17:14

  • Cornerstone – Jesus is the Living Stone, precious to God – He is the foundation of our lives

See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; the one who believes will never be shaken. – Isaiah 28:16

  • Faithful and True – Jesus is the Promise Keeper – He rules with righteousness and justice

I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice He judges and wages war. – Revelation 19:11

You rejected the Holy and Righteous One. You killed the Author of life, but God raised Him from the dead, and we are witnesses of the fact. – Acts 3:14-15

  • Prince of Peace – Jesus is the peace that transcends all understanding – Through Him, we have peace with God for all eternity

He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6

  • The Way, Truth and Life – Jesus is the Savior of the World… the only name under heaven by whom we can be saved

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. – John 14:6

I am the gate; whoever enters through Me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. – John 10:9

  • Lamb of God – Jesus is the Passover Lamb slain for us for the forgiveness of sins… the perfect and ultimate sacrifice

Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! – John 1:29

  • Resurrection and Life – Jesus is our life… the One who holds all power over death – By Him, we will one day be resurrected to life eternal

I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die. – John 11:25

  • Immanuel – Jesus is “God with us” – His presence will be ever with us to the very end of the age

The Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14

  • Good Shepherd – Jesus is the Lamb of God – He laid down His life for the sins of all mankind

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. – John 10:11

  • Bread of Life – Jesus is the living bread from heaven – In Him, we have life in abundance

I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty. – John 6:35

I am the true vine… you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. – John 15:1, 5

  • Light of Life – Jesus is the Light of the World who overcomes the darkness – He is the light of our lives

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. –  John 8:12

  • Morning Star – Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God – He leads us into a new dawn of hope and eternal life

I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star. – Revelation 22:16
