DISCERNING THE VOICE OF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

____________________________________________________________

Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God. – John 8:47

Lord, speak to me… guide me… direct my path. Have you often prayed a prayer like this? Do you long to hear from your Heavenly Father?

God desires that we seek Him, the Lover of our souls. He longs to speak to us… yet perhaps we are just not listening. Time in God’s Word… His letter of love to humanity… is key to hearing His voice.

Your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’ – Isaiah 30:21

God speaks to us in many ways… yet He chooses His Word first and foremost to be His way of speaking. We meet Him in the pages of Scripture where He shares His thoughts, His wisdom and His guidance for our lives. His divine revelations align our thoughts, beliefs, ideas and plans with His. His perfect will unfolds, revealing a clearer path before us.

My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. – John 10:27

⇒   How do we discern God’s voice when He speaks?

◊   It is quiet – God’s voice is not heard amidst the busyness of life. His is a still, small voice… a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12). To hear Him, be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10).

◊   It is peaceful – God’s voice is comforting, peace-loving. He will not cause you to feel anxious, troubled or fearful (John 14:27). He will lead you on the path of peace.

◊   It is of the Spirit – God’s voice speaks to your spirit. It is not audible. Wait faithfully for His quiet revelation. The Holy Spirit will make His words known to you (John 14:26).

◊   It aligns with His Word – God’s voice will never speak contrary to Scripture. He speaks the truth (John 17:17). His words are clear, true. right and good.

◊   It is individualized – God’s voice speaks personally, intimately, uniquely to you. He understands your joys and your struggles. His words will light your path (John 8:12).

We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory. – 2 Corinthians 3:18

In God’s presence, we hear His voice. He awaits our times of communion with Him. In prayer, in His Word, we experience His majesty, His holiness, His glory. It is in these holy times when He transforms us… quietly and gradually… into His likeness.
